What irritates me in Beauty Blogging

Good morning, or not, as it may seem for me today with this slightly ranty post.

Please take this post in the spirit in which it was written – we all love a good moan from time to time, and while I’m aware there are flipsides to each point I make below, it’s just a bit of fun and isn’t intended to upset anyone or refer to any individuals.

I get tired of seeing certain sorts of posts all the time in my bloglovin, wordpress and Twitter Feeds. This isn’t to say that I don’t like the bloggers who post them, but I feel they are either so overdone or so utterly pointless that if I see a post about these things, I never read them; or if a post that I read contains an annoying habit, I nearly always stop reading it.

Let me know if you agree, disagree, or have any annoyances yourself in the comments!!

1. MAC lipstick collections

Ok, everyone loves their lipsticks, including me. I own two – Chilli and Speak Louder. They’re great colours, long lasting, beautifully scented.

But who cares about MAC collections?! The packaging doesn’t really inspire, and we all know that MAC lipsticks are a little on the expensive side. So you showing your massive haul of MAC either means your flaunting your wealth or you’re just really irresponsibly buying overpriced lipstick!

2. Lipstick swatches on people’s arms

I get that it’s difficult showing what colours look like when it comes to eyeshadows. Palettes often contain more shades than you can ever wear at once. (While I’m on the subject, Colour Pop cosmetics get high marks in my books for swatching their eye makeup against 3 skin tones; pale, olive, and dark).

But Lipsticks being swatched on people’s arms tells me absolutely nothing. I WANT TO SEE THE LIPSTICK ON YOUR FACE! I can’t  count the times that I’ve clicked on a post reviewing a lipstick I’ve been coveting in the vain hope that the blogger who has similar skin tone to me will look good in it, giving me hope the lipstick will suit me and is worth buying.

More often than not there’s a pretty photo of the lipstick with some flowers, and a smear of lippy on a wrist.

I can feel my blood boiling in frustration even as I write this!!! I want to know if it will look good on me for crying out loud. It could be bright blue and look absolutely wonderful on your pale, elegant arm, but on your face? Nope!

3. Lush Hauls

see number 1. I adore Lush as much as the next person. I love going in and picking up all the same things I always pick up just to smell them and get my hands covered in glitter. I always end up buying the comforter bubble bar because it lasts me 4/5 baths.

Prices of lush have crept up in the years since I started going there. So I feel aggrieved by Lush Haul blog posts/youtube videos. We all know what they sell, and they rarely launch new products. So why do I want to read about which bath bomb you chose?? (Lush posts are best confined to Lush addict Instagram accounts. That way ‘fans’ can perpetuate their own obsessions and not bother everyone else….

4. Pastel Filters

This one is specifically an Instagram-related irritation. I HATE these “Cute girly pastel” accounts that spring up, and although completely devoid of any photographic talent, have thousands of followers. Basically, take  photo of something with polka dots or floral paper in the background, whack up the brightness and turn down the contract ridiculously low, so it looks like the person’s bedroom is pervaded by a thick fog.

It hurts my eyes, and p***es me off that accounts which don’t put any effort in get more followers than other lovely accounts (including mine of course…!)

5. Really Unhealthy Breakfast

Lastly, and probably again Instagram specific….

WHAT’S WITH ALL THESE BLOGGERS EATING ABSOLUTE CRAP FOR BREAKFAST?! Dougnuts? Candy? Are you SERIOUS? If your waistline is anything to go by then probably you’ve just taken the photo and actually you were munching muesli; Or you are blessed with a fantastic metabolism (for now at least…).

I do not condone the eating of high sugary foods for breakfast, though a little treat in a while is fine.

6. Apologetic posts about not posting

We know you have a life. You have holidays, family, friends, partners. Stop grovelling for our forgiveness. The sad reality is people probably didn’t even notice you were gone, such is the fickle world we live in. Stop apologising to people you don’t know, about not typing up some words about makeup on a blog.

I blog in my spare time (when I get any), fitting it around my full time job as a business development manager. I work hard! I go to the gym, I spend nights working away, or spending time with my husband. I will never let blogging feel like an obligation, and the second it does, I won’t do it.

7. Emtpies posts

Would *you* like to see the inside of my recycling bins? No? WELL WHY THE HELL DO I CARE ABOUT YOUR EMPTY BOTTLES?!?! WHY IS THIS A THING?

and…. breathe.

M&S Home picks under £25

Good afternoon! You can count this my final post before I go on my holidays to Crete for my 1 year wedding anniversary!

Recently I moved into my first home, and a lot of time and money has been spent filling it with furniture and things to make it functional, and of course, pretty!

I thought I would share with you three beautiful things I found from M&S that came in at under £25 to add a special touch to a home.

Stag cushion

The stag, synonymous with Game of Thrones and it’s house Baratheon, makes me feel rather autumnal for some reason! I’ve seen it everywhere in soft furnishings, and it adds a beautiful regal touch to any room.

This one costs £25, and is super soft.

Bumblebee embroidered cushion

Considering how beautiful this is, it’s staggering (heh) to think that it only cost £12 for the delightful and beautifully made cushion. It’s small, sure, but the colours really pop.

Capri Table lamp

Marks and Spencer was actually the last place we thought to  look for table lamps- we thought that they would come in too pricey, considering we only needed something simple and neutral toned.

These table lamps cost £19.50 each, which was ideally in our budget.

Icecream cologne from Library of Fragrance

This Summer saw the launch of a new and exciting fragrance for Library of Fragrance UK in the form of Mint Chocolate Chip Ice-cream. This is my favourite ice-Cream flavour ever, so I was super dooper excited about the launch, and from my point of view it’s a very welcome addition to the family!

Mint Choc Chip joins Vanilla, Strawberry and Pistachio to further add to the Ice-Cream family of colognes from LOF (Where oh where is chocolate, I hear you ask. Believe me, I’ve already asked!)

I’m excited to be able to review this lovely little collection for you on the blog today.

STRAWBERRY

WHAT IT REMINDS ME OF: a 99 cone (these should totally be renamed by the way, as they totally cost at least twice that.) I realise that the basis of a 99 is the vanilla soft serve ice cream, but i’m more thinking of that first lick, when you get that hit of strawberry sauce! Yummy!

PAIRING SUGGESTION: Barbados Cherry or Dark Chocolate for a more opulent Ice-cream Sundae approach, or a layer of Black Pepper.

VANILLA

WHAT IT REMINDS ME OF: Vanilla is vanilla. Not really a lot to be added!

PAIRING SUGGESTION: Freshen with Zingy Ginger or Grass, or add a fruity punch with Peach or Pina Colada!

PISTACHIO

WHAT IT REMINDS ME OF: I’ve never eaten Pistachio ice cream before, can you believe that? The Pistachio Ice Cream fragrance is slightly nutty, slightly sweet, cool and creamy.

PAIRING SUGGESTION: layer with Salt Air for a fresh touch, or Sunshine for a sweet and summery touch.

MINT CHOC CHIP

mint colonge

WHAT IT REMINDS ME OF: The creation of a ‘mint’ cologne has been one of the most frequent customer requests – wow! The scent is  fresh, cool and uplifting, and delicious at the same time!! I absolutely love it!

PAIRING SUGGESTION: Layer with Salt Air for a fresh touch, or chuck in pineapple for a fruity layer.

boden shoes Alice heel

Boden Alice Heel

Yesterday, I posted about my Boden sale pick in the form of my Scallop Sweater. I also bought some fantastic shoes at the same time – so fantastic in fact, that they deserved their own blog post. I’m talking about the Alice Heel of course, possibly the most instagrammed shoes this season!

I can totally understand how – they’re probably the prettiest shoes I could have imagined! Polka dot, bows, tassles grouped with a cute pastel colour palette. Again, as I mentioned in my last post, I wasn’t tempted to buy the with their hefty price tag of £119.00. Yes. they are beautiful, but realistically, how often will I wear them?! Apart from this blog post and for my holiday in a couple of weeks (that’s if my husband doesn’t laugh too much when I wear them, mind) probably not very often.

Therefore, the sale price of £35.70 was a lot more palatable for my bank account. You can shop the Alice shoe in this colour and also 3 other styles by clicking here. They do a sensible black and beige pair (reduced to £47.60), but where’s the fun in that, I ask? This post serves as a shameless deposit for colour popping images of these absolutely delightful heels! Enjoy…

Boden Clearance Pick – Scallop Sweater

I’m absolutely in love with Boden, but not necessarily with it’s price tag. It’s obvious that a lot of time and effort goes into the design of their seasonal collections, the fabrics are beautiful, the garments are well-made. But I just can’t commit to buying FULL price items…

The clearance of their Summer items has been on now for a few weeks at least, and I had a bit of a raid online. I couldn’t resist this Scallop embroidered sweater that I found, which would be absolutely perfect to wear through Autumn and Winter, reduced from £79.00 to £39.50. Much more affordable, for something a little bit special.

My size (10) wasn’t available, so I ordered a 12 figuring that extra fabric in Winter is never a bad thing!! To be honest, it would have fit me best in a 10, but I still love it! I styled it with my favourite Mango Jeans, and my new shoes from Clarks. Who doesn’t love a pair of brogues? The suede of these shoes is so soft! I can’t wait to be stomping through the autumn leaves in these!

Urban Massage comes to Manchester

Hello lovelies!

I’ve been a bit AWoL recently sorting out the new House and all, but I am back to tell you all about my recent experience with Urban Massage, a new service in Manchester! Urban Massage is a service which allows you to book a fully qualified, insured and vetted therapist to give a spa-quality massage in 60 minutes notice, in the comfort of your own home. I’ve got a £20 off code for my Manchester based friends, so read on…

I have to admit I was super excited about this, as living in a busy city such as Manchester, spas are either few and far between, questionable in quality, and the good ones are over-the-top expensive. Going for a country retreat isn’t always an option either, with petrol costs, and overnight stays factoring in.

Without the cost of premises and all that comes with it (candles aren’t cheap you know?) an hour massage session is available for £45.00 -That is an amazing price! Simply book your treatment from the selection of massages and prepare a room of your choice for the treatment. Use your own music playlist, your own candles, and your own comfort zone within your house to receive your treatment.

All set up and ready to relax!

I chose to book my Swedish massage treatment online – I had a minor issue with my post code not being on the system, as my property is a new build, but using the support chat function I spoke to the wonderful Sophie over the phone who was lightning fast to rectify the issue and got me added on to the system immediately. She then handled the rest over the phone, booking in my female therapist Megan to give me my treatment.

Megan Urban Massage Therapist
The Lovely Megan

Megan arrived on time lugging her massage table on wheels – which I then rather guiltily asked her to take up to the second floor of my house. Bless her, she did this with no complaint what so ever!

Beforehand I made my room look extra pretty and relaxing using my large collection of candles (see here and here).

Candles and Roses!
making my bedroom all relaxed!

I was made comfortable and asked which areas I would like to focus on – I’ve got super tight calves and shoulders at the moment, so Megan set to work on my muscles and showing me no mercy! I love a good bit of pressure in a massage, as I see it as more therapeutic than simple relaxation. However if that’s not your style, there are relaxation massages available for those who simply need to unwind.

Want to know the best bit? If you live in London or Manchester I can get you a whopping £20 off your treatment!!! That means an hour’s massage for only £25! Simply click here to book your treatment and claim £20 off – or enter RJESSITE at the checkout.

A massage table and natural massage oils are supplied. Treatments range from relaxing to remedial treatments including Swedish, Deep Tissue and Thai Yoga Massage. Currently operating in London and Manchester, you can book online via the website, or use the iPhone & Android apps or by calling 0203 0519 021

Thank you Megan for being so lovely and patient – I’m just glad my husband turned up to take the table back downstairs for us!!!

Side note: my super relaxing Spotify playlist can be found here.

Solita Prestwich Menu

SoLita Manchester – Prestwich Launch

This weekend my husband and I visited our newly opened and local SoLita restaurant- Manchester’s finest burger restaurant in my opinion. There appears to be a bit of an abundance of the super-junk-food joints springing up across the city, but to me, SoLita has managed to remain honest and unpretentious (Almost Famous goes just a bit too far for me to enjoy eating there).

What we like about it, is if you don’t quite fancy a burger there’s still a great selection of delicious dishes in the form of Chicken, Steak, Fish or otherwise that you don’t miss out!

For the first 2 weeks of service there is 50% off the food bill, so its a great time to try it out if you’ve never been, or even if you have! We ended up paying a mere £40 and I had two cocktails. The same price as  TGI Friday’s and at least two times as good.

The Prestwich restaurant is sleek and cool, while managing to blend into it’s surroundings – apart from the trademark neon logo in the window and the lego brickwork that is!

We ordered Ribs, Wings Rings and Things for starter to share (What it says on the tin – the things being corn on the cob), which was delicious, totally gluttonous and finger lickin’ good.

We each ordered a burger, my husband opting for their famous “Big Manc” burger, and me for the Jack Daddy, with Sweet potato crinkles – so delicious!

Jack Daddy - Beef patty, sticky Jack Daniels sauce with onion rings and monterey Jack cheese.

And because evidently that food wasn’t enough (!!!!!) we shared the SoLita Vanilla Icecream Donut Sandwich! Warm chocolate sauce with dark chocolate chunks… delicious!

These Prestwich digs make their restaurant number up to 3, with the Northern Quarter and Didsbury restaurants, too. All I can say is, long may it reign. The food is delicious, the service was great, and it helps that I live so close by so I can waddle home after eating so much food!

Thank you, Solita! Take a look at their menu – what do you fancy?
