A sweet creation retro sweets box

Xmas Gifts for a Sweet Tooth!

This post falls into so many categories for me, I’m so excited about it!

Firstly, SWEETS! Secondly, Small & Local & Handmade Business! tick, tick tick!

But seriously, this post contains two beautiful candy-related items from two different sellers which would make great Christmas gifts for a loved one or a friend – the best thing about it is that they won’t break the bank, and you’ll be supporting a small business in the process.

First up are these Retro sweetie boxes from A Sweet Creation, A Manchester confectionery seller who also specialize in events.

These boxes cost only ¬£5 each, and can be ordered directly from their Facebook page by following the link here! Items come giftwrapped and with a blank gingerbread man tag to write out. They always respond super quickly to messages, so don’t hesitate to have a chat about placing an order.

Secondly, is a piece of jewellery almost good enough to eat!

If you have a female friend with a super sweet tooth and penchant for jewellery, then look no further than this ADORABLE miniature sweetie jar necklace, created by the very talented Caroline at Tiny Treat Boutique. Her pieces are exquisitely detailed and really reasonably priced. Go and have a browse of her Etsy shop for other pieces. You can get anything from hot dogs to cake! I chose this piece because I literally cannot resist a coconut wheel.

The detail is incredible, and the quality is brilliant. I love wearing this piece, almost as much as I love Pick n Mix!

Bernese Mountain Dog

Lovingly Handmade handbag Charms by MisHelenEous

Cupcake charms

Hello all!

Very excited to share with you some beautiful and specially made hand-crafted items from the wonderful Mancherster-based MisHelenEous! Mascotted by Helen’s late beautiful border Terrier Whiskey, and now by the adorable puppy Heidi, MisHelenEous is about as British Handmade as British handmade gets. She’s a crafty one this one!

Are you a Radley lover? Ever felt marginalised because although you kinda like Scottie dogs you’ve always been more of a, say, Collie person? Look no further! Helen specialises in crafting bespoke pieces – handbag charms/keyrings of our favourite dog breeds. As a cat lover (and all round general animal lover really) Britain is a nation of dog lovers and we love our pooches than much that their iconography blends easily into our fashion and into our home furnishings!

I chose this Bernese Mountain dog charm, because I of the opinion that the bigger the dog the better – but if Beagles, Welsh Terriers or Chihuahuas are more your bag, she’s got you covered! These would make fantastic gifts for friends and family (sorry to remind you but Christmas is creeping up!)

The Kitschenette – handmade Jewellery

I stumbled across Kirsty and her amazing shop Kitty’s Kitchenette on Twitter recently and was like,¬† ‘wow’. Cute, quirky cartoon based drawings turned into actual jewellery you can wear, and in whatever form you wish! Earrings, cufflinks, bracelets, necklaces and brooches!

Now,¬† I am a huge Gamer Geek to the extent that I obsessively play RPGs (role playing games) for hours – I can lose days if I’m not careful! I get so addicted to the story and absorbed in the characters!

Fallout is one of the universes which I’ve sank days work of game play into, and when I spotted this Nuka Cola bottle cap brooch (the wasteland’s currency, seeing as dollars as virtually worthless in the post apocalyptic 50s USA) I had to have it! Priced at ¬£8 for the brooch and slightly more for a necklace.

I also couldn’t resist this ‘Raw Stone’ piece as a necklace, though it’d make an awesome brooch too! I just love the style of these designs.

Daisy Blue Candles Review

Daisy Blue Candles Review
Daisy Blue Candles Review Daisy Blue Candles Review

Daisy Blue candles, made by Lorraine Forsyth in Scotland, are simple and elegant in design, and beautifully fragranced. One thing that never occurred to me until I received these two candles from DBC was, normally when we buy candles we have to give consideration to the colour of the tin, and therefore you are often constrained in using certain scents (Strawberry is invariably in a red or pink tin, right? And Fresh Linen is ALWAYS blue!).

Lorraine’s candles come in cool brushes steel effect tins, or clear thick glass, packaged in clean cut white androgynous boxes. The wax is a calming vanilla shade- no danger of any of her candles clashing with your interiors, thank you very much. The only thing that stands out is the tiny blue daisy logo of DBC on the labels.

Angel’s Kiss is scented delicately with strawberries and champagne, in contrast to the powerful punch packed by Ginger & Lime in the larger candle jar. Ginger & Lime would brighten any living space or kitchen with it’s fresh zesty scent, whereas Angel’s Kiss would soften and relax the atmosphere in a bedroom or bathroom.

You can shop these scents and others (I’d love to try vanilla Rose, and Apple & Wild Mint!) on her website DaisyBlueCandles.com.

Readers of my blog can get a whopping 20% off candles if you enter Jess01 (that’s jess zero 0ne with no spaces!) at the checkout.

Holly's Lollies

Holly’s Lollies – Gourmet Candy Lollipops!

Holly's Lollies

Holly's LolliesHello there!

Bringing a culinary delight to you today that I am very excited about! Please meet Holly’s Lollies, the fantastic gourmet lollipop company! Holly started to make lollipops during a summer break from University, and they were so good she began to be unable to keep up with demand! Now with her degree under her belt, Holly is ready to focus all her attention on her Business (she also has a food blog, Mess Makes Food – Gosh, isn’t she a busy lady!)

I got my mitts on some of these lollipops to taste and review for you all – aren’t I the lucky one?! They’re beautifully wrapped with colour coordinated string, and have the beautiful logo on brown paper labels.

Pina Colada

My main passion when it comes to Cocktails (and also perfume!) A beautiful warm yellow opaque lolly with a coating of desiccated coconut. It tastes EXACTLY like a Pina Colada – Rum, Coconut, Pineapple- it’s all there!

Caramel Latte

My husband claimed this one instantly, though I managed to steal it for a moment to get a taste. The caramel has a distinct cinder toffee vibe to it- it would make a perfect treat for Halloween or Bonfire Night!

The other flavours are as yet to be sampled (I didn’t want a sugar overload!) but I’m so excited to try them, if they’re as good as the other two!

One thing my husband and I both liked was that the stick was plastic – paper can be cuter but when you’ve got a long lasting lollipop like this it can turn to mush – yuck!

  • Raspberry &¬†White Chocolate
  • Elderflower & Vanilla
  • Magical Mango

THE ONLY WAY to get these ahead of the launch date of 1st September is to support Holly in her Kickstarter Campaign. From as little as ¬£3 you can support her small business AND get your hands on a lollipop flavour of your choice! Whopee! I’ll definitely be supporting Holly – will you?

Visit her on HollysLollies.co.uk Рyou can subscribe to a mailing list to keep up to date with the company! Find her on twitter too.

Laser Cut wooden Brooches by TomSky

Hi Everyone!

Very excited to bring you a new Etsy Spotlight feature today! This is where I feature items from a small business Etsy store to help them to get recognition for the awesome work they do and the beautiful items they create with their talented hands.

Martin Tomsky makes the most beautiful nature inspired brooches, laser cut from wood and shaded to give depth and texture to his pieces. The main inspiration is woodland animals that you might find in England – I couldn’t resist the rather handsome stag (House Baratheon from Game of Thrones, anyone?) priced at ¬£15.00 and the adorable little mouse brooch, at ¬£10.00.¬†It makes me think of Beatrix Potter, books I loved as a child.

Martin’s store on Etsy also includes some pretty jaw-dropping one-off pieces that are far too intricate and beautiful for words.

He also makes beautiful necklaces (Check out this Owl hunting a mouse!) – going right onto my wishlist!

Continuing the Game of Thrones theme, if you’re more Stark than Baratheon, you could always get a Wolf Brooch instead!

In short, Martin’s creations are stunning, and a must have for any British Nature Lover or Brooch enthusiast. Support Small and shop on Etsy – you can also say Hi to him on Instagram!

Puntastic Greetings Cards by NYC-based Alacarde

puntastic greetings cards by alacarde etsy

Happy Saturday all! Hope you’ve got some exciting things planned for the weekend! Today I’d lvoe to introduce A La Carde to you, a small business based in NYC founded by Nova and Hea-Mi, two fantastically talented artists. I could NOT resist these cards when I saw them; I mean puns are great at the best of times, but these are food related puns! Double win!

I did a short interview with Nova and Hea-Mi about their A La Carde. You can shop their items in their Etsy shop!

A La Carde Contact card

1. What is the main inspiration behind alacarde & tell me about yourselves!

We met at Parsons our freshmen year and have always looked up to each other’s superior craftsmanship and attention to detail. Throughout our college years, we have always made each other handcrafted cards. Also, both of us love food along with sharing a slightly quirky & dorky sense of humor. We went to the Holiday Handmade Cavalcade hosted by Etsy New York a few years back, and we were instantly inspired to start our business. We were confident in our skill sets and felt both of us shared the passion and dedication.

Tying the Knot pretzel Card

2. How are you inspired to create new designs?

We look through Instagram, Google, Pinterest, Etsy, basically any source you can think of. We do several sketches for each pun and then pick out the ones we feel are strongest.

3. How long does it take to create a unique design from sketch pad to print?

HeaMi: It takes about half an hour to sketch and measure the coordinates for each design. Each card takes a different amount of time depending on the food but usually no more than half an hour.

Nova: Half an hour sounds rather lengthy but we handcraft each card and sleeve and that makes each card very special.

4. Future exciting plans for alacarde? What goals are you aiming towards?

N: Totes magotes! I’m just saying that because we will be selling punny totes soon. Shh, it’s still a secret! But it was something we mentioned during our initial brainstorming process and we’ve discussed about extending the variety of our products.

H: Sell at stationary stores, craft fairs, and hopefully one day having our own workspace!

Nice to Meat you greetings.thank you card
Nice to Meat you too!

Massive thanks to Nova and Hea-Mi for taking the time to speak with me about their amazing cards Рcheck out the rest of their range on Etsy or give them a follow on Instagram @_ALACARDE.
